You delete a message via webmail or on your devices, and it winds up gone forever, or moved to a trash folder, to be deleted in 15-30 days. All messages and your folder structure are all synchronized between devices using the imap setting (with varying IMAP config settings depending on the mail provider). So you're stuck deleting something 3 times if you want to get rid of it. To my knowledge, if you delete a message on your iPhone, it's not going to be deleted on your iMac or webmail interface. I personally dislike POP because it downloads each new message to your devices, individually. It does not transfer any folder information. However, POP only downloads messages from your mail account's Inbox (or other folders IF it allows you to do so) to your devices. When you sign into webmail, there are likely more folders in there than you see even on your iMac.
